Tan Sri Tony Francis Fernandes, co-founder of AirAsia, has transformed from an aviation disruptor to a dynamic leader in the tech-driven business world. His current role as CEO of Capital A, a rebranded parent company, reflects his bold vision to diversify beyond aviation. Under his leadership, Capital A now boasts a broad portfolio that includes AirAsia’s airline operations, financial services through BigPay, logistics under Teleport, and a growing digital ecosystem centred around the AirAsia MOVE Superapp. Launched in 2020, AirAsia MOVE offers customers an integrated platform for booking flights, hotels, and ride-hailing, alongside services like food delivery, reflecting Fernandes’ keen focus on technological innovation .
Throughout his career, Fernandes has built a reputation as one of Asia's most influential entrepreneurs, known for his ability to turn struggling businesses into profitable ventures. When he and Datuk Kamarudin Meranun bought AirAsia in 2001 for MYR 1 (around USD 0.25) and inherited significant debt, few could have predicted the airline's meteoric rise. Within two years, AirAsia became debt-free and went on to become one of the region's largest carriers, democratizing air travel for millions. Fernandes' business ventures extend beyond aviation and tech, with investments in hospitality (Tune Hotels) and sports, where he made headlines as chairman of Queens Park Rangers Football Club. His innovative leadership has earned him numerous accolades, including being named Commander of the British Empire (CBE) and Commander of the National Order of the Legion of Honour for his contributions to global aviation.
In recent years, Fernandes has focused on expanding Capital A’s reach in the digital economy, cementing his role as a leader in integrating technology and travel. His foresight in launching ventures like BigPay (a fintech service) and Teleport (a logistics company) has allowed Capital A to weather challenges in the airline industry, particularly during the global pandemic. His continued dedication to innovation is reflected in his belief that AirAsia should no longer be viewed simply as an airline, but rather as a digital lifestyle company.
